Karl Lagerfeld, the German fashion designer, has died at the age of 85 in Paris, France. Mr Lagerfeld was the hugely influential and successful creative director of three fashion houses: Chanel, Fendi and his own eponymous fashion label. He was the driving force behind Chanel’s acquisition of ateliers (private workshops) with such specialities as embroidery, feathers and flower making, in order to ensure the survival of their expertise. The surprise is that he simultaneously embraced technology, contributing to both sides of the discussion between hand and machine.
Donatella Versace wrote on Instagram: Karl your genius touched the lives of so many, especially Gianni and I. We will never forget your incredible talent and endless inspiration. We were always learning from you.
Anna Wintour (Condé Nast Artistic Director and Vogue Editor in Chief) wrote: “Today the world lost a giant among men. Karl was so much more than our greatest and most prolific designer—his creative genius was breathtaking and to be his friend was an exceptional gift. Karl was brilliant, he was wicked, he was funny, he was generous beyond measure, and he was deeply kind. I will miss him so very much.”
Alain Wertheimer(Chanel’s chief executive) wrote:Thanks to his creative genius, generosity and exceptional intuition, Karl Lagerfeld was ahead of his time, which widely contributed to the House of Chanel’s success throughout the world,” he said in a statement.
Victoria Beckham and Bella Hadid have also paid tribute:
